Self Medication through Arting

We all have tales to tell, as unique and interesting as we are as human beings. We have a need to communicate, share our experiences, in whichever manner feels comfortable. I have found that creating beauty out of broken or torn things allows me to tell my story. I can take a pile of broken glass and some glue and whisper sweet songs of the memories of my childhood. And I have found healing and love through these songs.

Using stained glass on reclaimed windows and picture frames allows light to shine through and brightens the image, which in turn uplifts the spirits. The designs flow and invite the viewer to participate in the story, encouraging the idea of going with the flow. The contrast between metal, glass, and wood parallels the complexity of the human essence. We are strong and fragile, soft and sharp. And we have beautiful tales to tell.

It is important to me to share this gift with others by offering arting workshops. Opportunities for others to find their artistic voices and explore ways in which they can tell their own tales through the art of mosaic in the Michigan area.

Artist Bio

Michelle is a self-taught mosaic artist who has been working with stained glass on reclaimed windows or repurposed picture frames from the Salvation Army for almost a decade. She is a Special Education Teacher at her day job but uses the therapeutic creative flow of arting to help her put her own pieces together in a story that makes sense for her. Born and raised in Michigan, she is a Detroit area girl to her core.
